Schiehallion is in many ways an outstanding project: In July 1998, just 27 months from sanction and less than five years after discovery, one of the largest oilfields discovered in the last decade in the British North Sea has come on stream. Located 150 kilometers west of the Shetlands in the North West Atlantic, the estimated 250-450 million barrels oil field lies in an area characterized by an unprecedented combination of deep water (water depths of approximately 400m) and extremely challenging wind, wave and current conditions. As a traditional fixed production platform was not viable in this most inhospitable environment, BP Amoco and its partners decided on the innovative engineering approach of Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels.
The Schiehallion FPSO holds a number of records: With a storage capabiliy of 950,000 barrels of oil, it is the world's largest new build vessel of its type and has been constructed in the shortest build cycle. It incorporates the largest process facility (154,000 barrels per day) and is moored by the largest turret ever installed on an FPSO, which allows the vessel to weathervane around its anchored position. Designed to withstand a hundred year storm condition, the 246m long, giant 'city-like' vessel has an operational life of 25 years and a fatigue life of 50 years. Schiehallion does not only stand for the highest achievement of modern offshore technology in all areas, but also set new benchemarks for Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) performance to minimize the risk for people working on the vessel and the enviromental impact.
